The calendar says summer has reached the halfway point, but students are
starting classes, which makes it seem as if summer’s almost over.
If it’s time to give the summer of 2010 a final grade, we’re rating it
A-plus.
We can’t remember a season when local people enjoyed so many opportunities for
fun.
Let’s look back fondly on some of the highlights: the return of Sculptures on
the Square, the DeKalb Outdoor Theater, the Auburn Fire Department Diamond
Jubilee and Strawberries in the Park.
For the second time in three years, lifelike sculptures are populating downtown
Auburn and drawing legions of real humans to admire them.
Every day, tourists and local people are strolling Auburn’s streets with maps
in hand, guiding them to the sculpture locations. It’s common to see three
generations of a family making the circuit.
Music fans of every age have enjoyed free concerts each Friday evening at the
DeKalb Outdoor Theater. The Friday series wraps up this weekend with The Little
Big Band.
In its second season, the theater offered a diverse lineup of performers ranging
from classic rock ‘n’ roll to smooth jazz, modern country-rock and the
timeless patriotic music of the Fort Wayne Philharmonic. We can’t wait to hear
what’s coming in 2011.
We may have to wait 25 years for another party like the Auburn Fire
Department’s 125th birthday celebration, but it should be worth it.
Firefighters and their friends organized a fabulous day of fun and food for
their Diamond Jubilee.
The Strawberries in the Park event keeps getting bigger every year, but it
can’t get tastier. This year it combined with a Wednesday session of
Auburn’s growing Farmer’s Market and Clint Stephens’ spectacular flowers
for an ideal day on DeKalb County’s picture-perfect courthouse square.
Auburn’s monthly downtown cruise-ins for collector cars continue to grow, and
we still can look forward to more Thursday nights on the square before fall
takes over.
Let’s hand out gold stars to the Auburn Arts Commission, DeKalb Outdoor
Theater board, Auburn Fire Department, Auburn Garden Club and Downtown Auburn
Business Association for giving us so many special occasions.
Listing all the donors who supported these events would be an impossible task,
but they should know we appreciate them. At a time when money is precious, they
still invested in our community’s quality of life and made 2010 a summer to
remember.
