AUBURN — More than 30 actors will take the stage at Cedar Lake
Church of the Brethren Wednesday evening when Auburn Actors Theater presents the
musical comedy “Romeo and Harriet,” directed by Jed Freels.
Freels said the performance is special because the troupe is celebrating its
20th anniversary. Three actors from the group’s first show in 1992 will be on
stage garnering laughs again this year.
“It is unbelievable the amount of support the community has shown over the
past 20 years,” Freels said. “We hope to keep the crowd laughing.”
The show takes place in modern-day New York City, where employees of the
Montague’s Department Store and Capulet’s Discount Mart meet in the streets
to trade insults, and Romeo and Harriet fall in love.
Unlike the Shakespeare classic, this story has happy ending, Freels said.
“We wanted something with a large cast, and we wanted a musical, because those
are always fun,” Freels said.
A cast of actors from all over DeKalb County, Fort Wayne, Avilla and Pleasant
Lake has rehearsed for the past six weeks under Freels’ direction. Freels said
he is proud of all the group has accomplished in preparation for Wednesday’s
preview show and dessert night.
Tickets for next weekend’s Friday, Saturday and Sunday dinner shows are sold
out. However, Freels said, those who do not have tickets may attend
Wednesday’s performance, beginning at 7 p.m., for $5.
Freels said the community will have one more opportunity to see the show, as it
also will be performed at the DeKalb Outdoor Theater June 22 and 23.
Tickets for Wednesday’s preview show and dessert night may be obtained by
calling Freels at 925-2838.
