New Outdoor Theater ready to open

AUBURN — The DeKalb Outdoor Theater is preparing to launch its inaugural season.

The first event will be a dedication and concert Saturday, May 30, at 2 p.m. It will include performances by the Auburn Community Band, Heaven Bound, DeKalb High School’s Classic Connection show choir and the Patricia Krus School of Dance.

People attending the dedication may bring lawn chairs for seating. The theater also has a limited number of portable bleacher seats. In case of rain, the dedication will take place on the following day.

This summer a performance series will be offered on Friday nights, June 5 through Aug. 14. All 11 events will start at 7:30 p.m., and admission will be free to the public. For the first Friday event on June 5, Froggy Radio is presenting the local classic rock band Choice.

The remaining Friday events are: The Apple Chords Barbershop Quartet — June 12; Auburn Community Band — June 19; Spike & The Bulldogs — June 26; Patriotic Performance — July 3; Aaron Miller’s Classic and Contemporary Rock Band — July 10; to be determined — July 17; Jeoffrey Benward (of contemporary Christian duo Aaron Jeffrey) and The New Hope Choir — July 24; Patricia Krus School of Dance — July 31; Little Big Band — Aug. 7; and bluegrass band Audie Blaylock and Redline — Aug. 14.

Nine additional events are being planned outside the Friday Performance Series, including seven with free admission:

The Hillsdale Town & Country Chorus — June 2; Old Crown Brass Band — June 15; Summer Gospel Praise Fest featuring The Imperials — June 20; Auburn Community Band — July 12; Earle’s Country Jam — July 25; Band Extravaganza — Aug. 2; Earle’s Country Jam — Aug. 8; The ACD Festival presents GuitarFest featuring The Joey O Band — Aug. 29; and Community Festival of Worship and Praise — Sept. 6.

“The residents of DeKalb County are very fortunate to have the new Outdoor Theater as an entertainment venue,” the DeKalb Outdoor Theater Board said in a news release. “This facility will provide an excellent home for the promotion of music and the arts. The many individuals, civic organizations and businesses who contributed to this project can be very proud that this dream has become a reality. “

The outdoor theater is on the east side of Cedar Creek, next to the DeKalb County Fairgrounds east parking area. To reach the theater, take Center Street to Fifteenth Street and turn west to enter the site.
